Here is a list of my most favourite natural horsemanship books. Highly recommended to everyone!
- True Unity by Tom Dorrance
- Think Harmony with Horses by Ray Hunt
Both of these natural horseman work in a very quiet and subtle way. They were true natural horseman before the term became popular. I would consider these 2 books to be a bit if an advanced read, because they focus more on the subtleties and philosophy of horsemanship. I had the pleasure of working with both men in the early 90s, and they were phenomenal.
- True Horsemanship Through Feel by Leslie Desmond and Bill Dorrance
This book has recently gained popularity in Ireland, and I can understand why. I was fortunate enough to be at the clinic where Leslie and Bill announced the release if this book! It is a great mix of Bills quite and subtle horsemanship (much like his brother), and Leslie’s do this get that style of instruction. A great book to advance anyones horsemanship.
- Natural Horse-Man-Ship: Six Keys to a Natural Horse-Human Relationship (A Western Horseman Book) by Pat Parelli
Now a days, Pat is a fantastic showman. When this book was printed, Pat was just one of a dozen natural horseman in California. Back then the parelli system was less then 10 years old, and information was much more readily available at a much lower cost. This book reflects that, and is an absolute wealth of information. I would particularly recommend this book to anyone just starting out with natural horsemanship, or anyone having difficulties mastering the basics.
- On Horsemanship by Xenophon
This book gives a very intersting insight to the ways of a natural horseman in the age of the Greeks. Peppered with philosophy and training techniques it gives a unique view of training a horse.
There is something to be gained by each and every one of these books. A must for every horseman!
